Routine and Effect:

You start the show with an offstage voice, asking the audience to write a word on a piece of paper. This represents a prize that can be won. It can be anything from a small toy, to an expensive sports car, or an amount of money.

Near the end of the show, you remind the audience they wrote down a prize on coloured paper before the show began. You bring a member of the audience on stage. You call this person “The Controller”. They will make all the decisions during this experiment. Three keys are displayed, as well as a box which is locked shut. You display three envelopes and three keys and state that only one of the keys will open the lock. You ask your spectator to mix the keys, and place one key inside each envelope. You can do this with your back turned.

When this is done, you tell them to number the envelopes 1-3.

Next you ask “The Controller” to return to the audience and choose three people to go onstage. While your spectator is doing this, you place three chairs onstage. You number them with the numbered envelopes 1, 2 and 3.

“The Controller” is then asked to decide which chair they want each spectator to sit on.

Once the spectators have taken their seats, you collect the pieces of paper from the audience. You ask each person sat on stage to take a piece of paper, each one being a different color. You then explain that the spectator who opens the lock will win the prize written on the piece of paper!

Now you ask the first spectator to open the lock, but it doesn’t open. The piece of paper they have shows an amazing prize, a diamond ring for example. The next spectator tries his key and this doesn’t work either, his prize would have been 1,000 Euros!

Obviously the last spectator is the one whose key will open the lock, and it does, but the prize for him is a banana! This is disappointing to the spectator but you then point out that you knew he was going to win this prize all along. You tell the audience that before the show you put a prediction inside the box. Inside the box is a banana!

You take your applause. Then, when your audience thought the effect was over you say that you felt this spectator was going to be lucky. To prove it you made another prediction.

You now flip the chairs over, and underneath the lucky spectators chair is an envelope. Inside is a piece of paper that says “The person who sits on this chair will be the lucky one. P.S. I’m sorry that the other two spectators didn’t win the diamond ring or the 1,000 Euros!”

All there is left to do is take your bow and enjoy your standing ovation.
