Description
From a packet of shuffled Tarot cards, the mentalist divines the first selection, and a century-old photo predicts the second and final selection.
EFFECT: The mentalist recounts the story of a distant relative from the early 20th century who was reputed to possess clairvoyant abilities. All that remains of her is a single photograph and a few handwritten notes that informed his next experiment.
Beforehand, he sends the spectator a cropped portion of the photograph on his Smartphone, requesting that he refrains from opening it until instructed to do so later. Next, he presents ten Tarot cards taken from the Major Arcana. Any cards associated with negative symbolism have been intentionally excluded in order to ensure an uplifting experience.
The first phase involves establishing a connection between the mentalist and the spectator. First, the spectator rolls a die and the packet is shuffled accordingly, matching the number shown. Then, the cards are separated in two piles and the spectator freely places one on top of the other. Finally, while the mentalist turns away, the spectator notes the top card and concentrates on the face. Without receiving any cues, the mentalist is able to accurately describe the selection.
Having established the connection, the mentalist moves on to the second phase. The cards are shuffled and eliminated at the same time until the spectator finds himself holding a single card ā The Sun. Consequently, the mentalist directs him to open the picture received at the beginning. The image reveals an old womanāthe mentalist’s ancestorāholding one Tarot card in her hand. The card is unmistakably The Sun.
No marking system. No gimmick. No switch. No stooge. Regular props. Easy to do. Everything is examinable. Works with a Rider-Waite Tarot pack or a Tarot of Marseilles. An additional idea describing how you can also have the spectator reverse the order of the cards after the shuffles is also explained.
