Description
Vanishing bottles are wonderfully made props. They are exactly what they need to be.
But they are treated worse than a junkyard dog.
Ninety-nine percent of the time they are put in paper bags, jokes are told, and then the bagi is crushed. And what happens nearly every time it is performed?
The performer has to beg just a little for the applause. Ugh!
To finish a trick with what is — at best — an implied vanish is just wrong in all sorts of ways.
The major weaknesses of this “put it in the bag, do some jokes and finally crush the bag” routine:
At no time does the audience handle a real bottle.
The audience wants to examine the bag, and they can’t.
If you do not think there are audience members who want to examine the bag after a vanish like that, you are kidding yourself.
Because the method is weak, the performer can’t build to the end, creating tension.
Because there’s no build, the applause suffers.
Because the applause suffers, the performer suffers.
But none of these weaknesses are the fault of the prop. So the question becomes, “How can we use this prop in a way that gives it the respect it deserves?”
Snack Food: Signed Bottle to Chip Can has entered the chat.
A real bottle is signed. It is placed on one side of the stage. A can of chips is placed on the other side. Comedic by play as the chips and beer “apparently” change places …twice.
Then the powerhouse ending. The bottle vanishes. The spectator opens the chip can and removes his signed beer bottle. BOOM!
